Five Paragraph Essay DesignThe goals and objectives of the instruction: Fifth grade students should be able to sit down in one setting and type a two page, five paragraph essay that contains a hook, thesis statement, at least eight sentences per paragraph that expresses at least three stories, 20 three-syllable words, ten transition words, and a clincher statement after have been given a prompt. Identify prerequisites and learner characteristics Identify typing skills, vocabulary of writing words (like hook), and how to tell a story. Testing and evaluation strategies to be used in the instruction, as appropriate Use Utahwrite.com to monitor their writing at least three times a week with the maximum score of 30. Feedback mechanisms that will support testing and evaluation Web building, typing skills, and increasing word choices. Practice activities to be used in the instruction, including feedback strategies Brainstorming, organizing thoughts, modeling, class discussions, typing your ideas down, and parent involvement with their writing for feedback. Examples and non-examples of the procedure or concept (as appropriate) Five clear paragraphs that develop an idea vs one paragraph with ideas changing from topic to topic. Introductory presentation of instruction The paragraph compared and contrasted to the essay. Making a poster paper model of what a five paragraph should look like. Motivational strategies to be used in instruction Self checking is highly motivating. Knowing writing secrets are motivating. Having a discussion of how everyone is doing is motivating. After test party is not what drives them, but it a wonderful reward after the state test. Basic plans for instructor materials Computers, pencils, paper, copies of good essays to evaluate, and lists of words to choose from. For modeling, it will be poster board and colored paper. On going posters to add great words they can use in their essay. |
