Letter to my students about Copyright
Mrs. McShinsky Class Guidelines
When In Doubt….Get Permission
Copyright
Be Creative! A copyright protects the financial interest of your creativity!! Having a copyright makes you want to create more!
You own the copyright! People have to ask you permission to use it!
BUT…wonder if you want to use the creative work of someone else? You need to know how to ask permission to use their work and how to find the person who made it.
So…. Do you need permission for everything? Well, almost everything. When in doubt, get permission. It is better to be safe than sorry.
We want to use pictures and music off the Internet! What is important that we need to know?
1. Get permission from the owner.
2. Give credit, display the copyright notice, and provide copyright ownership information.
What if the teacher assigns a project and we need to use copyrighted information? Am I allowed to copy and paste?
The good news is that there are guidelines to follow so you can use copyrighted information for educational reasons. You can even make a portfolio of all the academic work you have created. If you ever have an interview for a job, you can use your projects as an example.
Guidelines to keep you Safe!
1. No more than two copies of a project may be made. One copy for the creator and one copy for the school library/media center if you follow the educational guidelines on copyrighted multimedia material included in your educational project.
2. Only 15 days for an online project if you don’t have permission from owners.
3. How much material you can use of copyrighted material?
Motion media work: up to 3 minutes or 10 percent, whichever is less, of a single copyright.
Text: up to 10 percent or 1,000 words, whichever is less, of a single copyright
Poem: an entire poem of less than 250 words or up to 250 words of a longer poem, but no more than 3 poems from one poet or 5 poems from different poets from a single anthology.
Music and Lyrics: up to 30 seconds or 10 percent, whichever is less.
Photographs or illustrations by one person: Up to 5 photographs or illustrations by one person and no more than 15 images or 10 percent, whichever is less, from a single work.
Numerical database or data table: up to 2,500 fields or cell entries or 10 percent, whichever is less.
When you are learning in K-6, you are exempt from adhering strictly to those portion limits.
